One of the prominent things that happened this fourth quarter at Grace Holistic Center for Education was the thunderstorm charade. My classroom and I decided to visit a nice little café in Yorkville, Belladonna, which had every breakfast item, sweet treat, and savory, salty, food you could think of.

The interior was beautifully set with plants and statues, while the exterior allowed you to look out the window and entertain yourself with the passersby and the cars. Upon our visit, we patiently waited for our food and talked amongst each other. But, of course, all good things come to an end.

About 30 minutes to an hour later, it started to rain. Sure, It was a little unusual given we anticipated the rain to come a day later, but we weren’t too worried. At least for a while.

The rain got heavier and heavier. Soon it was pouring! Thunder made quick work and the aura of the room became increasingly anxious. Not too long after, everyone pulled out phones in a panic. Loved ones were called and weather reports were checked. I could see some panic color the faces of my peers, but we tried our best to laugh it off.

We waited a while, some stress-ate and others bounced their knees and twiddled with their hands. In the midst of our panic, the storm calmed down, and the beating of the water became still and the rain changed from tense to restful.

Serenity danced in the room. We waited outside on the porch and the lightning simply changed to amusing. As our ride pulled up, we all ran to the car and talked about how to stay safe in these situations. It’s a fun memory I’ll cherish whenever I ponder about the fall of the rain, the boom of the thunder, and the strike of lighting.
