Glenbard West High School boys basketball head coach Jason Opoka called it the ideal start to a potential special season.

Last season, the Hilltoppers won all but one of their games in the abridged regular season to establish themselves as one of the top teams in the State.

During the recent June team season, the Hilltoppers maintained their high level of play by winning all of their games, including defeating Simeon twice and adding a signature victory over Kenwood.

“As a team, we wanted to pick up where we left off in April,” Opoka said. “Our leaders built a culture of unselfish play. They prioritize making winning plays and sacrificing for each other, and we left off that position. We beat some really good teams, including Simeon twice, Kenwood, St. Rita, Glenbrook South, and Fenwick. The kids really bought in, and paid attention to detail which takes care of things.

“The best thing I saw from our team was that every game they all gave it 100%. That willingness and effort was evident day to day, and in practice and they showed that they continue to learn. We picked up where we left off from last season. It all starts with our leaders. They wanted to be successful and be in those big games. They all feel we belong among the best in the State. We played great defense and rebounding.”

The Hilltoppers, one of the tallest teams in the State, played many games with a starting five that averaged nearly 6-foot-7, with 6-11 junior forward Braden Huff leading the way. Huff, one of the top players in the State, is a coveted inside-outside highly-skilled player in contention for the Mr. Basketball Award for next season. Huff added an offer from the University of Illinois June 20.

The Hilltoppers added a key transfer in the offseason. Senior forward Bobby Durkin transferred from Hinsdale South to Glenbard West after the end of last season. Durkin, a 6-5 forward, blended in smoothly with Huff, 6-5 Cade Pierce, 6-7 Ryan Renfro and 6-3 Paxton Warden in the June games.

“Bobby came in fit like a glove,” Opoka said. “He’ a skilled ballplayer, tremendous team player who has played in big games, understands his roles and rebounding. It’s a blessing he is coming into Glenbard West. He already made us better as a unit, and a deeper team.

“We’re looking forward to having a really successful season.”
