Comments reflect the GOP focus on two fronts

Hoorah!

The ineluctable Bela Suhuyda finally has gotten around to castigating me. I had been worried sick that he would not stoop to put me in my place, even as he castigated my colleague, Wayne Johnson, up one side and down the other. I didn’t know whether to be joyful or despondent when he consistently ignored me.

But now, The Chas is a happy camper! Bela loves me! (See The Voice, page 6, April 27)

On a serious note, however, I would like to know which university awarded him a degree in history. Was it the University of Mar-a-Lago? Or the University of Wishful Thinking? (But I repeat myself.)

On another serious note, I must inform dear Bela that The Chas possesses an extensive vocabulary and that he does not need anybody’s assistance in putting words in his mouth – especially when the “assistant” misses his point completely.

Having written that, now the Professor can chew on the following.

Republican Party has become so drunk on power that they have thrown caution to the wind. They believe that they have been called by their God, i.e. T. Rump, to undo the “evil” wrought by Democrats over the past 70-plus years. Now that they control half of the states in the U.S., the U.S. Supreme Court (plus many inferior courts), and half of the U.S. Congress, they feel the time is right to “take back our country,” restore the “natural order” of society, and “make America great again.”

The GOP has been busy as bees on many fronts. The Chas will focus here on two of them.

In the matter of politics, the GOP has gone way beyond gerrymandering in order to ensure that they control more congressional districts than the Democrats. They have changed the rules of elections drastically by (1) reducing the number of polling places, (2) shortening or eliminating early voting, (3) banning mail-in ballots, (4) requiring a government ID card before a ballot is issued, (5) eliminating the busing of potential voters to and from a polling place, and (6) stationing “observers” at polling places and authorizing them to challenge any ballot they suspect is “fraudulent.” More ominously, the state of Florida recently passed a bill which would allow the state’s legislature to overturn any election the majority party found unfavorable to it. The goal is to establish a one-party form of government — similar to China’s – whereby the voter is forced to select from a list of hand-picked “candidates.”

In the matter of education, the GOP has declared war on “woke” education. They are hard at work to turn back the clock to an era in which public schools did not teach critical race theory, gender identity, human sexuality (including menstruation!), and criticism of America’s role in world history. Bible-reading and praying in class (or on the football field) would be restored, and non-Christian students would just have to lump it. Private/religious schools would be fully funded by use of vouchers and/or scholarships. More ominously, the GOP has indulged in wholesale censorship, banning books in school libraries which even may have the barest hint of “wokeness.” All it takes is a parent who is upset by his/her child’s reading material to have that material pulled from the shelves and stored in a musty closet. One school in the Deep South went so far as to empty its library completely in order to be on the “safe” side.

This madness is spreading like wildfire.
