According to information on the book’s jacket we learn many things about Dr. Stephen L. Carter, professor of law at Yale University and novelist.

Stephen L. Carter, bestselling author, delves into his past and discovers the inspiring story of his grandmother’s extraordinary life, which he shares in his new edition entitled: “Invisible.”

“Carter set out to write a history and biography of his awe-inspiring grandmother, and it is natural that he would concentrate on his family.

“We learned for the first time, courtesy of Carter, that Lucky Luciano’s real name was Salvatore Lucania, now known at Salvatore Luciano.

“Later, in describing the 20-person team of lawyers led by Thomas Dewey that broke up Lucky Luciano’s grip on mob activity, he says that the group included ‘a man who would later serve in the cabinets of two presidents of the United States, one as attorney general and the other as secretary of state.’

“Invisible is a fascinating story of a family of which Stephen L. Carter can be justifiably proud and a compelling picture of an important time in American history, interweaving issues of race, politics, and personal ambition. I am very glad to have been introduced to Eunice Carter, and if your expectations are set for the right story, I think you’ll be, too.”

From Walter Isaacson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Leonardo Da Vinci and Steve Jobs: “In this haunting and powerful biography, Stephen Carter tells the astonishing story of his grandmother, a brilliant African-American lawyer who struggled with prejudice and personal tragedies. It is a riveting and moving story, one with enormous resonance for our own time.”

“A black female lawyer in the 1930s whose legal strategy helped put away Lucky Luciano and who became a protégée of Thomas Dewey, Eunice Hunton Carter led a life that seems almost fantastical. Yet she lived and did all these things and much more. Stephen L. Carter tells his grandmother’s story with a clear eye and clear prose to match. This fascinating work reintroduces us to the life of a once-famous woman who should never have been forgotten.” Annette Gordon-Reed, author of The Hemingses of Monticello

“Page after page of surprises. Revealed is an incredible family story hidden until now about black people with intellect and grit. Oh, and this is a new window on American history. Stephen Carter’s strong skills as a novelist are evident in this powerful biography.” Juan Williams, author of Thurgood Marshall: American Revolutionary.”

Stephen L. Carter is the bestselling author of more than five novels, including The Emperor of Ocean Park and New England White and over a half dozen works of non-fiction. Formerly a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, he is now the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law at Yale University, where he has taught for more than 30 years. He and his wife live in Connecticut.
