State representative Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, voted in support of the Fiscal Year 2027 Illinois State Budget, a balanced spending plan that strengthens investments in education, public safety, healthcare, and essential services while maintaining Illinois’ commitment to fiscal responsibility.

“As lawmakers, one of our most important responsibilities is passing a balanced budget that reflects the values and priorities of the people we serve,” said Kifowit. “This budget makes critical investments in our schools, supports our first responders and veterans, protects healthcare services, and continues to strengthen our State’s financial foundation.”

The Fiscal Year 2027 budget includes a $350 million increase in Evidence-Based Funding for Illinois schools and restores funding for property tax relief grants designed to reduce the burden on local taxpayers while supporting public education. The budget also provides funding for workforce development, public safety initiatives, veteran services, healthcare programs, and services for seniors and individuals with disabilities.

“Strong schools and strong communities go hand in hand,” Kifowit said. “By continuing our commitment to the Evidence-Based Funding formula and restoring property tax relief grants, we are helping school districts meet student needs while providing relief for taxpayers.”

A longtime advocate for firefighters, paramedics, law enforcement officers, and military veterans, Kifowit highlighted the budget’s continued commitment to supporting those who serve Illinois communities.

“Our first responders and veterans make tremendous sacrifices on behalf of others,” Kifowit said. “This budget helps ensure they and their families have access to the resources and support they deserve.”

Kifowit also thanked legislators and staff who worked through the final days of session to complete the budget before the start of the new fiscal year.

“Budget negotiations require thoughtful compromise and difficult decisions,” Kifowit said. “While no budget is perfect, this plan reflects a commitment to fiscal stability, responsible governance, and investing in the people of Illinois.”
